Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal, and an archipelago comprising seven islands, two of which are inhabited, off the northwest coast of Africa.
Day 2, Friday, Arrive Madeira
Arrive at Funchal, the capital of Madeira. Upon arrival you are greeted and transferred to your hotel. (Hotel do Carmo/Castanheiro Boutique Hotel/Savoy Palace)
Day 3, Saturday
Madeira, the “floating garden,” or the “pearl of the Atlantic,” is a unique subtropical paradise in the Atlantic Ocean with dramatic and breathtaking scenery (35.4 miles long/13.7 miles wide). Its mild climate, average temperatures of 77-degree Fahrenheit in the summer and 63-degrees in the winter, make it the ideal island for a relaxing or active break at any time of the year. Madeira’s lush vegetation hides the fascinating indigenous Laurel Forest, a UNESCO Nature World Heritage Site since 1999.
Funchal, the capital city and its bay, where architecture and nature are charmingly combined, invites you for a delightful stroll, discovering the narrow traffic-free streets paved with black and white mosaics and lined by jacaranda trees. In the old town, the Farmer’s Market offers you a display of the great variety of local flowers, fruit and vegetables, the result of Madeira’s rich volcanic soil. Madeira is known for its namesake wine and warm, subtropical climate. The main island of Madeira is volcanic, green and rugged, with high cliffs, pebbly beaches and settlements on deltas of the Fajã River. Capital Funchal has botanic gardens and is known for its harbor and a large New Year's fireworks show.
