This 6-night trip takes you on a delightful self-drive tour of Denmark. Begin in Copenhagen, where sights include Tivoli Gardens, Amalienborg Palace, the old harbor of Nyhavn, and a stroll along the Stroget. Pick up your rental car and head to Roskilde, where you see the Viking Ship Museum, then onward to Kvaerndrup for a visit to Egeskov Castle. Continue to Odense and Hans Christian Andersen’s home, now a museum dedicated to the world-famous fairy-tale writer. Next, drive to Aarhus, where the Old Town, Den Gamle By, is a fascinating open-air museum of completely furnished old Danish houses. After a ferry to North Zealand, drive to Hillerod and Frederiksborg Castle. Continue to Helsingor and visit Kronborg Castle, the setting of Hamlet. Return to Copenhagen along the coastal road, perhaps stopping to visit the Karen Blixen Museum. Back in Copenhagen, return your rental car. Day 1 – USA/Copenhagen
Depart from the East Coast via Icelandair to Copenhagen.
Day 2 - Copenhagen
Arrive at Copenhagen airport and transfer to hotel on your own. (Comfort Vesterbro or similar)
Day 3 - Copenhagen
Today, explore the capital at your leisure. Recommended visits include Tivoli Gardens, Amalienborg Palace, Christiansborg Palace, Nyhavn harbor, the Little Mermaid, and Carlsberg Museum, and the pedestrian shopping streets of Stroget. (B)
Day 4 - Copenhagen/Roskilde/Odense
Pick up your rental car and travel westward to Roskilde. Visit the Viking Ship Museum and Roskilde Cathedral. Continue to Halskov, and drive over the bridge to the island of Funen. Drive to Kvaerndrup and visit Egeskov Castle, Europe’s best-preserved water fortress, and its spectacular gardens. Continue to Odense. (First Grand Odense or similar) (B)
Day 5 - Odense/Jelling/Aarhus
This morning, visit Hans Christian Andersen’s home, now a museum dedicated to the world-famous fairy-tale writer. Cross the waterway to Jutland peninsula. En route to Aarhus, detour to Jelling and the UNESCO-listed complex that includes the 10th-century rune stones left by two Viking kings. Continue to Aarhus and visit the Old Town, Den Gamle By. Also, you may visit the cathedral and the Moesgaard museum of Danish prehistory, or drive past Marselisborg Castle. (First Atlantic or similar) (B)
Day 6 - Aarhus/North Zealand
After breakfast, depart by ferry to the peninsula Sjaellands Odde on Zealand. Continue to Hillerod and Frederiksborg Castle, home of the Museum of National History. The castle chapel houses Denmark’s oldest organ, dating from 1610. (Hillerod or similar) (B)
Day 7 - North Zealand/Copenhagen
Today, drive to Helsingor, passing Fredensborg Palace, perhaps making a brief photo stop. In Helsingor, visit Kronborg Castle, setting of Hamlet. Return to Copenhagen along the coastal road, where you may stop to visit the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art or Rungstedlund, which was the family home of Out of Africa author Karen Blixen. Continue to Copenhagen and return your rental car. (Comfort Vesterbro or similar) (B)
Day 8 – Copenhagen/USA
Transfer to the airport on your own for your Icelandair flight to the US. Arrive the same day. (B)
