You’ll have the choice of exploring Norway on your own in winter, when the northern lights illuminate night skies, or summer, when the sun shines well into the evening. Choose an upgraded option and you’ll go on a tour to see the northern lights or travel to an uninhabited island to admire the midnight sun, depending on the season. Starting at from $1499
DAY 1 Depart US for Oslo, Norway.
Depart USA gateway cities by air.
DAY 2 Arrive in Oslo
Check into Comfort Hotel Borsparken, centrally located. Oslo, the capital of Norway, sits on the country’s southern coast at the head of the Oslofjord. It’s known for its green spaces and museums. Many of these are on the Bygdøy Peninsula, including the waterside Norwegian Maritime Museum and the Viking Ship Museum, with Viking ships from the 9th century. The Holmenkollbakken is a ski-jumping hill with panoramic views of the fjord. It also has a ski museum. (B)
DAY 3 Oslo
Breakfast at your hotel. Free day. Take optional city tour in the morning. City tour includes a guided walk through the Vigeland Sculpture Park. See the world-renowned collection of works by Norwegian sculptor Gustav Vigeland. Continue to the famous Holmenkollen Ski Jump for a photo stop and to enjoy the view from one of the city’s finest vantage points. Next, take a coach tour through the center of the city, as your guide provides information about the city’s history and culture and its major attractions, such as Akershus Castle and Fortress and the Royal Palace Park (Slottsparken). (B)
DAY 4 Oslo - Tromsø
Get to your accommodation. The arctic city of Tromsø is the world’s northernmost university town and the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle. The city lies between the sharp craggy peaks of the Lyngen Alps, and combines wild scenery with urban life. Due to the city’s location right in the middle of the planet’s Northern Light’s belt, Tromsø is the perfect place in the world to observe the northern lights. Check in the centrally located Thon Hotel Polar. (B)
DAY 5 Tromsø
Breakfast at your hotel. Free day. Activity, Northern lights, the chase, the magic and the bonfire, 6 hour (Optional) We pick you up in Tromsø and take you by bus on a chase for the magical Northern lights. With good local knowledge we will find the best area for the lights and good scenery for your pictures. To find a clear sky we will drive where we have to, even to inner Troms if needed. During the evening your guide will tell you interesting information about the Northern lights, both the science and the folklore. We will also show you how to adjust your camera settings for pictures of the northern lights, and we will take pictures of you with the lights for you to take home to show your family and friends (available for download in original size from our Flickr account). For some extra fun in the snow we also bring our “butt boards”, just in case we find some nice hills to sleigh down! We may also visit our lavvo (our modern Sami helter) and sit around the nice warm bonfire, and roast marshmallows (if we are within reasonable driving distance from our base camp). (B)
DAY 6 Tromsø
Breakfast at your hotel. Free day. Activity, Snowmobile Safari, daytime (Optional) The modern mode of transportation in the Arctic gives you the opportunity to venture far into the wilderness. Experience the mountains of the far north. We begin with a thorough safety introduction. The trail has a distance of 15 km each way, 30 km in total. The starting point is at 250m above sea level, and the guide brings you up to 875m. You will be driving in pairs, one driver and one passenger on each snowmobile, with opportunity to switch places during the trip. Due to the dramatic topography, a reduced speed is held during parts of the tour. The top point of the trail is a frozen lake, where you can speed up. If time and weather allow it, you can try out ice fishing on this lake. At the end of the trip, you will be served a hot meal in a lavvu (Sami tent). (B)
DAY 7 Tromsø
Breakfast at your hotel. Free day. Activity, Guided snowshoe trip, Daytime (Optional) The area around Tromsø Villmarkssenter offers a wide range of hiking possibilities by snowshoes. On this trip, we’ll explore Kvaloya, Norways fourth largest island only 25 minutes from Tromsø city centre, and hopefully, see some of the arctic wildlife during our trip out into the wild. Once at our camp we’ll provide snowshoes and clothing to keep you warm on the trip. Our guide will talk you through the route and lead you onto an exciting trek into the arctic countryside. The mountains locally offer great views of the surrounding area of Tromsø and Balsford. If the weather is good we’ll enjoy some hot drinks outside and admire the views before heading back to our center, otherwise, you can relax in our lavvo by the fire when you get back. (B)
DAY: 8 Tromso, Norway/USA
After breakfast, take your return flight to Oslo then connect the trans-Atlantic flight back to the USA. (B)
