Vacation Overview

Take an 8-night trip, starting your journey to Tibet by first traveling to Chengdu, where you catch a flight to Lhasa, capital of Tibet. While in Lhasa, visit the Tibetan palaces and temples, as well as parks and monasteries. Afterward, travel to Gyangtze and visit the Kumbun Stupa. Later, journey to Xigaze, Tibet’s second largest city, and tour the Tashilhunpo Monastery, seat of the Panchen Lama. Finally, fly back to Lhasa to spend a night before flying to Chengdu and eventually the US. You can also take an extension to visit more of China or Nepal. Starting from $4065, including air, with weekly guaranteed departures, except in December, January, and February.

Itinerary

Day 1, Tuesday - USA/Chengdu
Depart the USA on your Cathay Pacific trans-Pacific flight to Chengdu. Cross the International Date Line.

Day 2, Wednesday - Chengdu
Arrive Chengdu and transfer to your hotel. (Jinjiang)

Day 3, Thursday - Chengdu/Lhasa
Fly to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. (Lhasa) (B/L/D)

Day 4, Friday - Lhasa
Visit Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Sera Monastery, Norbulingka Park and the Drepung Monastery. (B/L/D)

Day 5, Saturday - Lhasa/Gyangtze
Travel 150 miles by motor coach/car to Gyangtze. Visit the Kumbun Stupa, which has 10,000 Buddha figures. (Gyangtze) (B/L/D)

Day 6, Sunday - Gyangtze/Xigaze
A two-hour drive takes you to Xigaze, the second largest city in Tibet. Here, you tour the Tashilhunpo Monastery, the seat of the Panchen Lama. (Xigaze) (B/L/D)

Day 7, Monday - Xigaze/Lhasa
Return to Lhasa on a route that follows the Yarlung Zangbo River and the gorge that cuts through the mountains. (Lhasa) (B/L/D)

Day 8, Tuesday - Lhasa/Chengdu
Join our extension to Nepal (see below) or take a morning flight to Chengdu. Afternoon sightseeing in this capital of Sichuan, China's most populous province. (Jinjiang) (B/L)

Day 9, Wednesday - Chengdu/Hong Kong
Transfer to the airport for the flight to Xian and our China Extension, or to Kunming and "South of the Clouds," or fly to Hong Kong. (Harbour Grand) (B/L)

Day 10, Thursday - Hong Kong/USA
Board your Cathay Pacific flight for the USA. Arrive home the same day. (B)

Nepal Extension
7 Days/6 Nights

Day 8, Tuesday - Lhasa/Kathmandu
Fly to Kathmandu and transfer to your hotel. City tour of Kathmandu and Swayambhunath. (Yak & Yeti) (B)

Day 9, Wednesday - Kathmandu/Patan/Kathmandu
Morning sightseeing of Bhaktapur, Pashupatinath, and Boudhanath. Afternoon visit to Patan and Tibetan Refugee Camp. (B)

Day 10, Thursday - Kathmandu/Chitwan
Proceed to Royal Chitwan National Park by road. Packed lunch en route. (Machan) (B/L/D)

Day 11, Friday - Chitwan
With your guide explore the heavily forested hills of this wildlife haven bordering India to the south. (B/L/D)

Day 12, Saturday - Chitwan/Kathmandu
Return overland to Kathmandu. Remainder of day free for individual activities. (Yak & Yeti) (B)

Day 13, Sunday - Kathmandu/Hong Kong
Transfer to the airport for your international flight to Hong Kong. Transfer to your hotel for overnight. (Harbour Grand) (B)

Day 14, Monday - Hong Kong/Los Angeles
Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the US. (B)

China Extension
6 Days/5 Nights

Day 9, Wednesday - Chengdu/Xian
Fly to Xian, China's great ancient capital at the eastern end of the fabled Silk Road. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to your hotel. Afternoon sightseeing includes the Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Bell Tower. (Grand Metro Park) (B/L)

Day 10, Thursday - Xian
The highlight of a visit to Xian is a trip to the excavation of the 6,000 life-size terra-cotta warriors and horses guarding the tomb of the Emperor Qinshi Huangdi. Stop at Hua Qing Hot Springs en route. Tonight enjoy a feast of delicate dumplings. (B/L/D)

Day 11, Friday - Xian/Beijing
Travel by air to Beijing, capital of the People's Republic of China, where you are met by guides and transferred to your hotel. (Chang An Grand) (B/L)

Day 12, Saturday - Beijing
A full-day sightseeing reveals the wonders of this 3,000-year-old city. Highlights include the monumental Tian An Men Square, the expansive courtyards and ceremonial halls of the Forbidden City, the dazzling Temple of Heaven and the Summer Palace, where the emperors escaped the city's intense heat. Day 13, Sunday - Beijing
A full-day tour takes you to the magnificent Great Wall with a stop at the impressive Ming Tombs. This evening, enjoy a Peking Duck dinner. (B/L/D)

Day 14, Monday - Beijing/Hong Kong

Day 15, Tuesday - Hong Kong/USA
After breakfast at your hotel, transfer to the airport for your return flight via Cathay Pacific to the States. Arrive home the same day. (B)

South of the Clouds Extension
7 Days/6 Nights

Day 9, Wednesday - Chengdu/Kunming
Fly to Kunming, capital city of Yunnan province, "South of the Clouds," and home to twelve minority groups. Transfer to your hotel. Time permitting, visit either Western Hills or the traditional Taoist Golden Temple. (Bank) (B/L)

Day 10, Thursday - Kunming
Today, travel about two hours southeast to see the unique geological formations of the Stone Forest, and perhaps visit a village of the Sani people. (B/L)

Day 11, Friday - Kunming/Dali
After an early breakfast, transfer to the airport and fly to scenic Dali. Visit Lake Erhai, the Three White Pagodas, and the old city. (Asia Star) (B/L/D)

Day 12, Saturday - Dali/Lijiang
Travel overland to Lijiang. Stop at Xizhou, a village of the Bai nationality. Continue to Cang mountain, and stop for lunch at a local restaurant. Arrive in scenic Lijiang, populated by the Naxi and other ethnic groups. (Grand) (B/L/D)

Day 13, Sunday - Lijiang
Sightseeing includes Jade Peak Monastery, the Baisha Murals, Jade Spring Park, vestiges of East Ba script, and the canals and cobbled streets of the old city. (B/L/D)

Day 14, Monday - Lijiang/Kunming/Hong Kong
