Day 1, Monday, USA/Bangkok
Depart the USA on a Cathay Pacific Airways trans-Pacific flight for Southeast Asia.
Day 2, Tuesday, En Route
Cross the International Date Line.
Day 3, Wednesday, Bangkok
Arrive in Bangkok, where you are met and transferred to the historic riverfront Oriental Hotel.
Day 4, Thursday, Bangkok
Tour the city in the morning with visits to some of Bangkok's renowned Buddhist temples, including the Temple of the Golden Buddha and the huge reclining Buddha at Wat Po. Pause for lunch at Supatra River House, then proceed in the afternoon to visit the grounds of the Royal Grand Place. Dinner features the spicy Thai specialties of the Rim Nam Restaurant, where you enjoy a performance of traditional Thai classical dances.
Day 5, Friday, Bangkok
A day cruise on the MS Oriental Queen brings you to Ayuthaya, the ancient capital of Siam. En route visit the old royal summer residence. After dinner at the hotel, an hour at a relaxing spa has been arranged.
Day 6, Saturday, Bangkok
Visit the former residence of Jim Thompson, the western pioneer of the Thai silk industry. After lunch at Ban Khun Restaurant, the balance of the day is at leisure.
Day 7, Sunday, Bangkok/Eastern & Orient Express to the Malay Paninsula
Following breakfast, transfer to the railroad station and board the Eastern & Orient Express for the southbound journey through the Malay Peninsula. After brunch, the train pulls into a local station where you disembark to watch the E&O traverse the famous Bridge on the River Kwai. Board a traditional barge and sail down the river, passing splendid teak wood houses. On arrival at Chung Kai, there is a short visit to the peaceful World War¡é¨°cemetery. A brief scenic coach ride returns you to the E&O for afternoon tea. Dinner is served in a beautiful dining car. Then relax in the comfort of your compartment, now transformed into a cozy bedroom.
Day 8, Monday, Eastern & Orient Express to Butterworth, Malaysia
Breakfast is served in your compartment. Then spend the morning watching the passing scenery from a lounge car or the open deck of the observation car. On arrival in Butterworth, depart on a guided excursion to colonial Georgetown and Fort Cornwallis on the island of Penang. Return to the train for afternoon tea. Dress for dinner, served in one of the opulent dining cars, then spend a relaxing evening in the bar car with its resident pianist.
Day 9, Tuesday, E&O/Singapore
Breakfast in your compartment. The train crosses to Singapore via causeway over the Straits of Johor. Upon arrival, transfer to the Goodwood Park Hotel. The afternoon is free. In the evening, board the Imperial Cheng Ho for a harbor cruise while enjoying a sumptuous dinner of local and international cuisines.
Day 10, Wednesday, Singapore
A morning tour includes Singapore's busy waterfront and Shenton Way financial district, then a panoramic view from atop Mt. Faber, and the orchid collection at the Botanic Gardens. Lunch is at the legendary Raffles Hotel in the Tiffin Room, for a taste of Anglo-India, Arab Street, and Chinatown. A rickshaw ride brings you back to the hotel. The evening's highlight is the ?¡ãNight Safari" with a buffet style dinner, and a tour by tram through the habitats of more than 1,200 nocturnal animals.
Day 11, Thursday, Singapore
Breakfast at a Yixing Xuang Teahouse, then head for the Jurong Bird Park to view the entertaining bird show. The balance of the day is free for shopping or exploring the city on your own, or you might take the optional Feng Shui tour.
Day 12, Friday, Singapore/Hong Kong*
In the morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Hong Kong, where you are met and transferred to the Island Shangri-La Hotel. *(Or fly to Indonesia island paradise of Bali for the 20-day program.)
Day 13, Saturday, Hong Kong
Today starts late, with a dim sum brunch at Luk Yu Tea House, one of the best Cantonese restaurants in Hong Kong. Then an afternoon sightseeing tour introduces you to the sights and sounds of this marvelous city , including the teeming Stanley Market, the floating restaurants and sampans of Aberdeen, and Victoria Peak, reached by tram. Dine at the Peak Caf¡§| Deco & Bar overlooking the Harbor.
Day 14, Sunday, Hong Kong/Macau/Hong Kong
Today visit nearby Macau, the former Portuguese colony, which is reached by an early morning hydrofoil trip. Visit the Old Fort, Penha Hill, Barrier Gate on the border of the People's Republic of China, the historic Church of St. Paul, and Lou Lim Leoc Chinese Garden. Lunch at Pousada De Sao Tiago, and retrun to Hong Kong by hydrofoil the late afternoon.
Day 15, Monday, Hong Kong
A full day at leisure for independent sightseeing or shopping. Or you may choose an optional tour visit mainland China. In the evening, visit Lei Yue Mun Fishing Village, and enjoy a farewell seafood dinner.
Day 16, Tuesday, Hong Kong/USA
Board a Cathay Pacific Airways homebound flight to the USA and arrive home the same day. |

MYANMAR (BURMA) |

Day 17, Monday, Siem Reap/Bangkok/Yangon
Depart Siem Reap by air to Yangon, the capital of Myanmar (formerly known as Burma), via Bangkok. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to the Strand Hotel.
Day 18, Tuesday, Yangon/Bagan
Transfer to the airport for a flight to Bagan. On arrival, tour the 11th century Shwezigon Pagoda; Ku Byanuk Gyi Temple; Shwegu Gyi Temple, noted for its fine stucco carvings and a panoramic view of the area's many monuments; and Ananda Temple which features four huge standing figures of the Buddha. Accommodations are at the Thiripyitsaya Hotel.
Day 19, Wednesday, Bagan
In the morning, spend time at the local market at Nyaung Oo, a colorful labyrinth of stalls selling everything from spices to fabric and fresh vegetables.
Day 20, Thursday, Bagan/Mandalay
In the morning, fly to Mandalay and transfer to your accommodations at the Sedona Hotel. Then you travel up the Ayeyarwady River by boat to Mingun, site of the unfinished Mantaragyi Pagoda, which was to have been the world's largest such structure. Visit the 90-ton Mingun Bell, cast by the lost wax process and reputed to be the largest uncracked bell in the world. Cross the Ava bridge to view some of the numerous pagodas and monasteries on the hills of Sagaing.
Day 21, Friday, Mandalay
A day of sightseeing includes Mandalay Hill; Golden Palace Monastery, a superb example of a traditional wooden building; Kuthodaw Pagoda, which is known as the world's largest book because of its 729 marble stele engraved with Buddhist scriptures; a workshop of kalaga tapestry weavers; and the former royal capital of Amarapura, just outside Mandalay.
Day 22, Saturday, Mandalay/Yangon
Visit the local markets before flying back to Yangon. Your accommodations are again at the Strand Hotel. Sightseeing includes a visit to the 2,500-year-old Shwedagon Pagoda and its 325-foot gilded stupa, Sule Pagoda, the National Museum, and Bagyoke Market.
Day 23, Sunday, Yangon/Bangkok
More sightseeing in Yangon before flying to Bangkok and the Oriental Hotel.
Day 24, Monday, Bangkok
A full day at leisure to explore the city on your own and absorb more aspects of Thai culture.
Day 25, Tuesday, Bangkok/USA
Board your return flight for the US and arrive the same day in Los Angeles. |
